Hospice care (sometimes referred to as palliative care) is a specific type of health care that focuses on relieving the pain and suffering of a terminally ill patient, as well as addressing the patient’s emotional and sometimes spiritual needs at the end of life.
Hospices typically do not attempt to provide a diagnosis or cure for an illness, but also do not perform any functions that will hasten death.
Hospice assistance is also often available for the patient’s family to help them cope with the situation. Hospice care may be provided in a dedicated facility or on an in-home basis.
