Bariatric Physicians specialize in the surgical treatment of obesity. Patients who do not respond to conventional methods of treatment for excessive body weight are candidates for bariatric surgery (after consultation and referral by a physician).

Bariatric surgery attempts to change the structure and functioning of the digestive system to restrict the body's food intake capacity. There are several techniques and methods available to the bariatric surgeon, including minimally invasive surgery.

Certain health conditions can limit your ability to be a candidate for bariatric surgery - make sure you provide a complete health history when discussing the options with your physician and/or surgeon. There are varying degrees of success that bariatric surgery can attain - you should discuss your expectations with your physician before proceeding.
