Optometrists are practitioners who provide comprehensive primary eye care. They hold a Doctor of Optometry degree.

Optometrists are trained to practice medicine for many eye-related conditions, in addition to providing optical eye care and prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. They provide primary eye and vision care – if they detect eye dieases they may refer to an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who evaluates and treats eye disease.

Some optometrists also produce and fit eyeglasses, but opticians are more likely to perform this. In addition they help manage and treat dry eye and glaucoma, as well as monitoring eye conditions related to diabetes.
